Recently my daughter studied the Japanese culture intensely at school. We decided over Spring Break to do our own Japanese meal at home and it was such a fun family meal!! I bought sushi at a local store, made udon noodles in miso broth, grilled asparagus, had sushi rice and teriyaki chicken. For dessert we bought mochi in a couple of flavors. We setup the living room floor with a tablecloth, chopsticks, candles, flowers, sat on pillows. They spent some time in the day making menus of all the offerings, made origami figures and really spent some time decorations. We had a blast and I would highly recommend doing this as a family meal together. They were involved, interested, engaged and happy. Kind of like a restaurant in your own house! If you have a picky eater, this is a great way to open them up to a fun family experience with new offerings in a non-threatening way. Keep things fun!
